Most people have stomach acid reflux at some time in their lives, either as heartburn or acid regurgitation. When refluxed stomach acid touches the lining of the esophagus, it causes a burning sensation in the chest or throat called heartburn. The burning, pressure, or pain of heartburn can last as long as 2 hours and is often worse after eating.

Almost everyone gets heartburn sometimes, but persistent heartburn or chronic heartburn may be cause for concern. What works best to treat heartburn depends on what foods or other factors may be causing the heartburn. Anyone who suffers from persistent heartburn, typically defined as heartburn symptoms experienced two or three times per week, should have their symptoms evaluated by their physician. Even people who experience symptoms only once a week may feel that they have persistent heartburn.

Tomatoes and citrus fruits are foods that cause heartburn in some people. These highly acidic foods can lead to excess stomach acid and may cause heartburn. The causes of heartburn vary from individual to individual. Some people are not bothered by tomatoes or oranges, but may be bothered by fried or spicy foods. It is sometimes necessary to keep a food diary to isolate the foods that cause heartburn in your own diet.

The typical American diet includes many foods that may cause heartburn. Fried foods, spicy foods and fats of all kinds can lead to heartburn. The tendency to eat two or three large meals as opposed to several smaller meals throughout the day probably causes a lot of cases of heartburn. Symptoms often follow large meals and lead to the need for antacids or heartburn herbal remedies. Eating a small meal every couple of hours may not only be what helps with heartburn, but what helps one lose extra pounds. Overweight people experience heartburn more often than those who are at their ideal weight.

Stress, smoking, drinking alcoholic or carbonated beverages and even certain types of exercise are all heartburn causes and treatments of heartburn that are effective often include efforts to reduce stress and smoking; drinking more water, less sodas and beer. While moderate regular exercise is helpful, squatting, bending and running can bring on or worsen heartburn. Any exercise, other than a leisurely stroll, that follows a meal, particularly a large one, will often bring on heartburn.

Efforts to reduce stress, eating in a relaxed environment, chewing slowly may all help prevent heartburn. Eating on the run is one of the leading causes of heartburn. It is next to impossible to avoid everything that may cause heartburn all the time, but it is possible to quit smoking, eat smaller meals, get regular exercise and avoid alcohol and carbonated beverages. Anyone who experiences heartburn two or three times per week should have their symptoms evaluated by a physician. The best treatment for heartburn may be a prescription drug, but should include lifestyle changes and efforts to avoid the leading causes of heartburn, as well.

Some companies that sell herbs and other natural products have concoctions that include a combination of herbs for frequent heartburn prevention as well as heartburn relief. A combination of herbs for heartburn relief may be more effective than just one type of herb. Fennel and mint oils are commonly recommended, but some doctors advise that mint of any kind can bring on heartburn. Whenever you are buying herbs and other natural products, you should choose an established company that sells a number of different products, not just herbs for heartburn relief.

So what is heartburn/GERD? In a nutshell, the two are a little different with heartburn affecting people in less severe ways than GERD. Heartburn is a condition which you’ll experience occasionally although there are those with frequent and chronic heartburn who do suffer it more regularly.

Heartburn/GERD is also known as gastroesophagel reflux disease and a more serious condition. When someone reaches this stage then they’ve got something thinking to do particularly if they haven’t sought medical assistance. A word of warning – by trying to go it alone and refusing to seek some medical help means Heartburn/GERD could even develop into a more serious condition, sometimes life threatening.

Avoiding Heartburn/GERD

There are some things you can do or be aware of to cut down the incidence of heartburn/GERD. For instance, avoid eating late at night. This is a point which is continually pushed home by experts yet people don’t seem to be getting the message.

One of the reasons for this is the refusal to make any lifestyle changes. Many are reluctant to compromise their current lifestyle habits and instead, will deal with heartburn when it affects them. This is not a sensible choice because making changes to one’s lifestyle is getting on the right track to eliminating Heartburn/GERD from their lives.

Laying down after a meal is another mistake. In fact, this relates to eating late at night which could even be as early as 7-8pm. Once a person has eaten, the general thing is to sit or lay in front of the TV but if you’re a heartburn?GERD sufferer then this is inviting another attack.

Another cause is diet which again relates to lifestyle. A diet high in fatty foods, dairy products, spicy foods, tomatoes products, and caffeine and citrus is a leading cause of frequent heartburn and GERD. Into days food the general eating habits contribute as well. Many people consume fast foods on the go and drink large amounts of caffeine and carbonated drinks.

Heartburn/GERD Diagnosis And Symptoms

Symptoms are recurrent heartburn, pain or discomfort with acid when lying down, frequently waking up with heartburn at night, coughing or choking feeling, difficulty swallowing, sour taste or stomach acid coming up in the mouth and throwing up blood. These symptoms require that you see your health care specialist for diagnosis and treatment.

If your doctor suspects that you may be suffering from heartburn/GERD they may recommend several different types of tests. A barium x-ray is a somewhat uncomfortable procedure that could help determine if there is heartburn/GERD as well as a test called the endoscopy where a lighted tube is inserted down the throat to examine the esophagus and stomach.

Chronic heartburn affects more people than we realise. In the USA, the statistics suggest somewhere between one in seven to ten people will suffer from chronic heartburn.

The alarming rate of people who simply try to live with it is also a little alarming. Chronic heartburn means a person is experiencing two or more episodes a week.

Simply dismissing it as your lot in life and trying to mask it with ineffective over the counter products just won’t cut it. Remember, frequent heartburn attacks several times a week means you could quite possibly have acid refux disease.

Chronic heartburn could be the signal that a more serious problem could be at play so getting proper medical advice is just common sense.

Chronic Heartburn Treatment

Treatment methods will usually be a combination of prescription medications and all important changes in lifestyle. There are drugs such as Prilosec and Prevacid that help, even as other medications fail and, are known as proton pump inhibitors that shut off the “pump” that secretes acid into the stomach.

Other medications may only switch off certain receptors within the stomach to reduce acid production and, are known as histamine blockers.

With an estimated 30 to 40 million Americans suffering from heartburn at least once a month, it’s not a condition which should be taken lightly. Chronic heartburn may be the result of weakening of the muscles operating a valve or hiatal hernia or bulge in the diaphragm.

Left untreated, chronic heartburn would end up as an ulceration of the esophagus as well as cause other respiratory problems and, also may result in esophageal cancer.

Chronic Heartburn Symptoms

The following symptoms are associated with chronic heartburn:

- chest burning sensation
- throat burning sensation
- problems swallowing
- food returning to your mouth after swallowing
- problems laying down
- sour and bitter taste in the mouth
- vomiting and belching

More Treatment Methods

In serious cases of chronic heartburn, treatments such as minimally-invasive videoscopic surgery that uses a few small incisions as well as produces less scarring, shorter hospital stays are now being favored over more traditional surgical methods.

Another treatment which can be effective in allowing patients to cut down or dispense with medications is the use of a small endoscopic device that permits the physician to place sutures in the muscles that control the stomach valve and tighten as well as improve stomach valve functioning.

So remember, it’s time to take the all important step of visiting your doctor when you suffer from heartburn two or more times a week, you’ve been experiencing these symptoms over a period of time, getting very little relief from medicines and the symptoms are a constant disruption to your normal daily activities.

Causes for heartburn can be lumped into two main categories… dietary and lifestyle and for chronic sufferers, it means making some major changes. The problem for many is it will take many an episode of heartburn before the “penny finally drops” which is a little hard to understand.

Mild sufferers haven’t got a lot to worry about because heartburn attacks are very infrequent. The cause may have simply been indulging in a little too much alcohol or spice laden food and a simple antacid treatment may be all that’s required to relieve the symptoms.

Dietary Causes For Heartburn

There are many foods that can relax the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), slow down the digestive system, or produce additional stomach acid. The LES is the valve between the stomach and the esophagus which, when it malfunctions, causes the stomach acid to rise back into the esophagus, causing an uncomfortable burning sensation. Avoiding or limiting foods that have an effect in this area can lower or eliminate your bouts of heartburn.

Foods that relax the LES include peppermint, spearmint and chocolate. Fatty and greasy foods will slow down the digestive system, which can also be a contributing heartburn causes. Carbonated beverages and large meals can increase the acid production in your stomach, making it more likely that those acids will find their way back up into the esophagus. Spicy foods are usually a no go for people who suffer from chronic bouts of heartburn while acidic drinks can also play a major part in bringing on an episode.

Making Lifestyle Changes

If heartburn is chronic in your life then you will need to look at your lifestyle. Making note of certain areas of your lifestyle which contribute to the cause of your heartburn and then discussing these with your doctor is a good place to start. Here are some causes of heartburn you may not be aware of:

- smoking
- being overweight
- eating right before you go to bed
- wearing tight fitting clothing
- exercising shortly after eating

Look at each of these individual instances in your life and make the necessary changes. Giving up smoking is a good start while it’s proven even a slight loss of weight can go a long way to cutting down the instance of symptoms.

In cases other than chronic heartburn, the instance of it occurring can be cut down dramatically just by making a few lifestyle adjustments. For more serious cases, there may be an underlying problem which means seeking proper medical opinion. The cause for heartburn can be pointed at several factors but you can eliminate many of these simply by performing some good heartburn prevention practices.

A great majority of people will suffer the discomfort of heartburn at some stage in their lives and recognizing heartburn symptoms as soon as they strike is best.

Even though it would be great if we could somehow see it coming, the quicker you can stop heartburn the less damage is done to your esophagus. Heartburn symptoms can range from mild to chronic, and it feels like a burning or hotness coming up your esophagus.

The burning in the chest area is commonly proceeded by a bitter or sour taste in the mouth. You should try to remain upright instead of laying down, and take some antacids for relief.

If you are experiencing chronic heartburn, go see your doctor. They will most likely recommend changes to your diet and lifestyle. You will need to try to decipher what foods or liquids set off your symptoms of heartburn, and make a note of it for your appointment.

For all you coffee addicts out there who have heartburn troubles, this is definitely bad news! Coffee and cola or soft drinks are a known trigger, and sometimes simply cutting out the foods that set it off can resolve the whole problem.

Your diet will need to be scrutinized for fatty or high acid foods. You may need to make major dietary adjustments or just a few minor changes. Your doctor or chemist can recommend an antacid for you, and for more serious problems you may require a prescription.

If you take the right action with your eating and drinking, you could prevent yourself from needing permanent prescription drugs to control the acid. Remember that the rising acid can seriously damage your esophagus over time.

We only get one body for our whole lifetime. What you eat and taste in the moment isn’t worth long term illness or disease, so make the diet changes you require. If you still have problems, make that appointment to see your doctor.

The incidence of the symptoms of heartburn around the world is quite high…that should come as no surprise. In the western world, at least 20 per cent of people have suffered heartburn symptom at one time or another and if you think it’s not worth worrying about then think again.

The frustrating part for the medical world is the symptoms of heartburn in many cases can be easily avoided through simple management process and commonsense. Avoiding it means knowing what causes the symptoms in your case and then putting into action steps to avoid it it. For those who suffer the symptoms of heartburn on a regular basis; at least twice a week then in your case, a visit to your doctor should be a priority.

What Is Heartburn Symptom?

Heartburn is described as a burning sensation that rises up through the lower chest and to the throat. Depending on it’s severity, it could last for several hours. On the other hand, reflux occurs when the acid in your stomach rises up into a tube called an oesophagus causing a lot of discomfort and in many cases, people have difficulty swallowing accompanied by excessive regurgitation.

What To Watch Out For

Experiencing these symptoms of heartburn at least twice a week should ring the alarm bells. Left untreated, there is a chance that it could cause further complications leading to other health related problems. Quite often people will suffer through these symptoms unnecessarily when a visit to the doctor would be all that’s required. Proper management of heartburn in most cases will not only alleviate the uncomfortable and sometimes painful symptoms associated with it’s occurrence but improve significantly a person’s quality of life.

A Change In Lifestyle Should Be A Consideration

Management can include making some lifestyle changes combined with dietary adjustments. Quitting smoking is a good starting point as smoking and heartburn usually don’t mix. If stress is a constant in your life then you need to find ways of reducing it and while this could mean a drastic re-think of your current lifestyle practices, give it serious consideration.

If you are overweight then consider losing some of those extra pounds. Fitting into your clothes more comfortably will be an obvious advantage of losing weight but did you know that tight fitting clothing, especially around the waistline, is a no no for heartburn symptom sufferers?

Some Foods Should Be Avoided At All cost

While it’s true that chronic heartburn symptom sufferers will suffer symptoms despite what they eat: this is usually because of further deep-rooted medical problems; there are certain foods that can aggravate heartburn symptoms in many people. One of the advantages of reviewing your situation with your doctor is that these foods can be identified and a plan can then be put into place to either avoid them completely or limit the number of times they are consumed.

Some people will suffer a heartburn or reflux attack by simply looking at some types of food. Some of the known “culprits” include spicy and fatty foods, alcohol and in some cases, coffee. There is also strong evidence supporting the fact that consuming food several hours before “hitting the pillow” should be avoided at all costs.

The symptoms of heartburn in many cases is not taken seriously and for those who experience it sparingly, that’s easy to understand. In most cases, it would have been brought on by unnecessary overindulgence. However, while it isn’t life threatening for the majority, heartburn symptom should still be treated with caution and remember, if it has become a part of your life on a regular basis and you haven’t sought medical advice yet, then do yourself a favor and visit your local health physician.
